We still don’t know many concrete details about the story or gameplay, but that will likely come as we inch closer to launch. Taking a similar pixel-art style as Celeste, Earthblade is a 2D action-adventure game that was first revealed in April 2021. The blog post also features a new screenshot, showing off a forested area in the game. Although it’s a fairly vague and non-committal announcement, it’s the first indication of a release date for the Celeste follow-up. Earthblade is an exploration action game set in a ‘seamless pixel art world’, and it’s in development by Extremely OK Games, the studio responsible for Celeste and Towerfall. Among other differences, the game will have a more open-world exploratory feel than some Metroidvanias. With Celeste being a breakout hit of the 2018 release window, there’s been a good deal of anticipation surrounding Earthblade, the next video game from developer Extremely OK Games. People will call it a Metroidvania when it comes out, because the similarities are definitely there, but the Earthblade team resists calling it a Metroidvania because they don't want to get boxed in.
